Don’t miss the great event!

The USF ITALIAN PROGRAM is pleased to remind you and your friends of the 14th ANNUAL FESTA ITALIANA 2011 events April 14-17, 2011. Festa Italiana is the primary fund-raiser for the Italian Club of Tampa. It is a weekend filled with great food, film and fun. For more information please visit: www.FestaItalianaTampa.com or call Kris at 813-342-3630.

WINES OF ITALY

Thursday, April 14, 2011 from 6pm to 9pm

The Italian Club of Tampa located at 1731 E 7th Avenue (in the historic Ybor City district of Tampa) Festa Italiana kicks off with Wines of Italy, a unique tasting experience where guests will sample over 70 wines from Italy while enjoying Italian antipasti and desserts. The silent auction offers an opportunity to win fabulous prizes and gift packages.

CINEMA ITALIANO

Friday, April 15, 2011 at 7pm

Screening of “Focaccia Blues” (2009) directed by Nico Cirasola. It is the story of two bakers from Altamura (Apulia region) who put the local McDonald’s out of business by stealing away their customers, enticing them with the local version of fast food: delicious focaccia topped with goodies like fresh tomatoes, meats, and cheeses. Altamura is well known for its doughy delicacies. Road signs welcome visitors to ”The City of Bread” upon entering the city limits. The film was awarded the distinction as Best Picture from the Association of Italian Film Critics. Based on a true story chronicled in a 2006 New York Times article “The Bread Is Famously Good, but It Killed McDonald’s,” the tale of two bakers able to defeat a McDonald’s has become the stuff of legends. Introduction and Q&A with Dr. Patrizia La Trecchia (USF Italian Program). Admission is free. Espresso, dolci, and popcorn will be available for purchase.

Screening of FOCACCIA BLUES at Cinema italiano!

Friday, April 15 · 7:00pm

Italian Club of Tampa, Ybor City, 1731 E 7th Avenue, Tampa, FL

The film “Focaccia Blues” (2009) directed by Nico Cirasola is the story of two bakers from Altamura (Apulia region) who put the local McDonald’s out of business by stealing away their customers, enticing them with the local version of fast food: delicious focaccia topped with goodies like fresh tomatoes, meats, and cheeses.

Altamura is well known for its doughy delicacies. Road signs welcome visitors to ‘‘The City of Bread’’ upon entering the city limits.

Introduction and Q&A with USF Professor Patrizia La Trecchia.

Admission is free.

Espresso, dolci and popcorn will be available for purchase.

For more questions, you may also contact the Italian Club of Tampa at (813) 248-3316 or alice@italian-club.org.

The USF ITALIAN PROGRAM receives and is pleased to announce the following USF lecture:

W.J.T Mitchell

2010-2011 Golding Lecture Series, School of Art and Art History, USF

Thursday, March 24, FAH 101, 7:00 pm

“Idolatry: Nietzsche, Blake, Poussin”

This lecture aims at a diagnosis of the return of idolatry and its “evil twin,” iconoclasm, in contemporary global political culture, and especially in the contemporary tendency to conceive of war in religious, Manichean terms, as a struggle between Good and Evil. Working through the transvaluations of the idolatry/iconoclasm complex in the philosophy of Nietzsche (Twilight of the Idols and Thus Spake Zarathustra) and the paintings of William Blake, the lecture stages a re-reading of Nicholas Poussin’s classic “scenes of idolatry” in The Adoration of the Golden Calf (London: National Gallery) and The Plague at Ashdod (Paris, The Louvre). This reading is designed to overturn the canonical view of Poussin as a conventional moralizer whose pictures endorse the brutal iconoclasm mandated by the Second Commandment, and reveal him (as in Blake’s description of John Milton) as “a true poet, and of the devil’s party.” The lecture concludes with a return to contemporary scenarios of ethnic cleansing in the war for possession of the “holy land” of Israel-Palestine.

W. J. T. Mitchell is Professor of English and Art History at the University of Chicago. He is editor of the interdisciplinary journal, Critical Inquiry, a quarterly devoted to critical theory in the arts and human sciences. A scholar and theorist of media, visual art, and literature, Mitchell is associated with the emergent fields of visual culture and iconology (the study of images across the media). He is known especially for his work on the relations of visual and verbal representations in the context of social and political issues. Under his editorship, Critical Inquiry has published special issues on public art, psychoanalysis, pluralism, feminism, the sociology of literature, canons, race and identity, narrative, the politics of interpretation, postcolonial theory, and many other topics. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Morey Prize in art history given by the College Art Association of America, and the James Russell Lowell Prize of the Modern Language Association. In 2003, he received the University of Chicago’s prestigious Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching. His publications include: “The Pictorial Turn,” Artforum, March 1992; “What Do Pictures Want?” October, Summer 1996; Cloning Terror: The War of Images, 9/11 to the Present (2011); Critical Terms for Media Studies (2011, edited with Mark Hansen); What Do Pictures Want? (2005); The Last Dinosaur Book: The Life and Times of a Cultural Icon (1998); Picture Theory (1994); Art and the Public Sphere (1993); Landscape and Power (1992); Iconology (1987); The Language of Images (1980); On Narrative (1981); and The Politics of Interpretation (1984).

PLEASE NOTE: On Friday March 25, from 10:00am to 11:30, Mitchell will also hold a workshop for faculty and graduate students. In the workshop, we will have the opportunity to follow up on the questions and thoughts provoked by the Thursday lecture, and to discuss a recent paper by Mitchell entitled “Migration, Law, and the Image.” It is closely related to the themes Mitchell will address in his public lecture, and discusses some recent works of art at the end. If you are planning to attend, please notify the contact below.

The USF ITALIAN PROGRAM has the pleasure to invite you to the following lecture:

University of South Florida – Tampa Campus

Marshall Student Center

MSC 4103

Tampa FL 33620

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Lecture at 6:00pm

Followed by Q&A with author Piero Rivolta moderated by Dr. Patrizia La Trecchia (Assistant Professor, USF Italian Program)

***** Do not miss the unique opportunity to attend a fascinating lecture and to meet the son of Renzo Rivolta, the founder of the car manufacturer Iso Rivolta, known for the iconic egg-shaped Isetta ‘bubble car’ designed in the fifties and recognized and loved worldwide!

The Need for Poetry – A Manifesto

by Piero Rivolta

We need to see and interpret the world in a more poetic way, and with simplicity. We need an infusion of poetry in life, in books, in movies, in the arts and even in government and business – to make everything simpler and more real.

We must restore the primary qualities that we all share as human beings —intuition, compassion, common sense, love, moral sentiment, admiration for nature, appreciation for beauty and a sense of fairness. Poetry, which shows things directly and clearly, can encourage all of these qualities and help bring about a renaissance in everyday life.

In the absence of such poetry, thinking and reasoning turn their backs on the unique qualities that make us human, causing us to live in a constant state of fear and confusion. With a strictly rational approach you can always prove a point, but at the same time, if you examine a problem only in the cold light of reason, you can always be contradicted or contradict yourself.

Stifle the impulses that we carry inside ourselves, because they are difficult to express and share with others, and we lose the joy of life and the passion for working or doing things, leaving us to struggle with stress and insecurity.

This situation occurs quite often in history and leads to dark periods in which human beings are divided by political parties or religious myths. In the process, they become slaves to systems that make their lives miserable with unbendable rules, and their only recourse is to lament the unfortunate state of affairs or exercise their right of free speech about it. But free speech without the possibility of a realistic approach to reality doesn’t get us anywhere. It only manages to dissect opinions about how to interpret freedom and rights in front of all sorts of committees—committees that generalize any event in order to put it in a particular category, and invent a new rule in order to increase their control and generate more wealth for those who sustain the parties or the religion. Any consideration for our reality, creativity, emotion, humor or common sense is left out.

The world is going through one of these dark periods now, and it unfortunately includes the United States, which we believed to be immune from such developments.

We need a new renaissance, and this is the country that has the ability to make it happen. But we must understand that a renaissance is always begun and carried out by poets, writers and artists who are capable of infusing their works with the true poetry of life and bringing light into our hearts. Theirs are the nurturing, realistic and creative thoughts that help people to listen to the fundamental values that are hidden inside ourselves.

So why don’t we get going?
